JAY REATARD Watch Me Fall CD/LP
After following Blood Visions
with a couple of singles comps, Jay Reatard offers up a full-length of new material that lacks a bit of the spark that made last summer’s Matador collection of singles
so much fun. While I’ve never been a huge fan of pop music, I’m like a kid with vegetables—sneak that shit in so I don’t know what I’m listening to until it’s too late and I’m hooked, Jay Reatard knows how to serve up an addictive fix hidden beneath two to three minute frenzies. Watch Me Fall finds Reatard continuing to balance between The Addicts and Cheap Trick, serving it up fast and sweet, while showing some growth from previous efforts. There’s a sense that the short, sharp, quick is giving way to a more accessible side. This will have the purists crying foul, but who wants to hear the shame shit over and over? This could have easily been the case, but I think even though Jay Lindsey refers to himself as a Reatard—he’s too smart for that. [Matador]
